Even though it debuted in 1983, each year I’m surprised at how many people—even Disney fans—still haven’t seen Mickey’s Christmas Carol. Watching this classic short has become an annual tradition at our house, and if you haven’t watched it (or done so in a long time) this is the year you should change that. If you’re reading this before Dec. 20th, you don’t even have to rent it: you can DVR it on Freeform.

In only 25 minutes or so, this animated adaptation of Charles Dickens’ 19th-century story stages the highlights of the original version with plenty of tongue-in-cheek humor along the way, not to mention loads of cameos by classic Disney animated characters from Goofy to Jiminy Cricket. My favorite part involves Willie the Giant using a lamppost for a flashlight, but I won’t spoil it for those who haven’t seen it yet.

Mickey Mouse plays Bob Cratchit and (with all due respect to fans of the edgier Mickey in the Paul Rudish shorts) at this point he is still the clean-cut, friendly version of Mickey lots of us grew up watching. There are obviously lots of versions of the Christmas Carol out there, including the more recent one from Disney with Jim Carrey, but this one is still our favorite. You should add it to your Christmas watchlist . . . for the kids, of course.

All of us at ConciEARS wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
