Return to Disney’s Past with the Skyliner Gondolas

Most of us have a treasured Disney attraction that long ago rode off into history, replaced because of changing guest attitudes, changing maintenance schedules, or even changing intellectual property. Quite a lot of you will remember Disney’s Skyway buckets, stretching across both Disneyland and Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. Whether your trip between Fantasyland and Tomorrowland took you through the Matterhorn or over 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, you likely hold on to memories of your birds-eye view of the magic, soaring over the crowds.

If you miss that experience, you are likely to love Disney World’s newest conveyance, the Disney Skyliner! This weekend marks the opening of the transportation system that was revealed to us just a couple of years ago at the D23 Expo. Join us as we try out this new highway in the sky.

For too long, the guests at many of Disney World’s resorts have been relegated to bus travel. Staying at the Art of Animation, Pop Century, or Caribbean Beach Resorts meant piling on to a bus to get anywhere other than the resort itself. Even though Disney does a great job of managing your family’s travel around the property, there is still a significant learning curve for those who want to get anywhere from these resorts. The Skyliner offers an alternative that will make those Monorail resorts envious!

The Skyliner features spacious gondolas, similar to those you may have seen at ski resorts. These gondolas are dressed up with images of your favorite characters riding in style. Stretched between the resorts on the south end of Walt Disney World, cables soar above nature, giving you a view that few have seen before. A short wait in line gains you access to the other resorts on the route, including the brand new Riviera Resort, Epcot, and Hollywood Studios. In case you missed it, Epcot and the Studios have the hottest tickets in town right now with the recent openings of the Food and Wine Festival and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Right amid the craziness, we get access to a whole new mode of transportation!

Each station has its own style like this one at Epcot.

The gondolas make moving from Hollywood to Epcot an absolute breeze. Tired of walking and had too big a meal at the Brown Derby, but you want to catch the new Epcot Forever show? Hop onto the Skyliner and save some steps! Multiple stations along the way mean that anybody can use these transports, not just those staying on one of the Skyliner resorts.

If you can’t wait to try out this new mode of transportation, book a trip ASAP to stay along its route! Art of Animation and Pop Century are cool resorts that offer great value to your family. If your kids (or you!) ever wanted to stay in a pirate-themed room, Caribbean Beach has you covered with newly renovated rooms. Disney's Riviera Resort opens later this year and will be the last stop before Epcot. The Skyliner gondolas open on September 29th, just a week from now! I spent much of my last trip hoping they would make their original open date, but I guarantee I will find a way to ride these when my next trip comes along in October.
