It has been nearly two years since I went to Disneyland.
Crazy to think. Even though I am a Colorado resident, my wife and I found ourselves heading to Anaheim multiple times per year. It all started with a race. Well, a medal. Back when runDisney races took place at Disney World, Disneyland, and Disneyland Paris, there was a grand medal for those folks silly enough to complete races at both coasts during the same calendar year. The pursuit of that medal was the impetus for our first foray into Disneyland back in 2016.
Since then, we have made multiple trips out west, finding it quicker and cheaper to reach by air than the nearly four-hour trek to Orlando. After years of planning the semi-annual, week-long vacations to Walt Disney World, we were hooked by the charm and accessibility a long weekend in California could provide. And our friends at ConciEARS were happy to oblige!
On our last trip, we visited that fabled campus of creativity, the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank. It was an amazing experience that I really need to get around to writing about someday. We also got to spend a couple of days in the parks with great friends. It was the Halloween season, and we ate up the limited-time fruits of every pumpkin-shaped decoration available.
When we left, we had no idea that it would be the last trip for a long time. I mean, we did, but a long time meant six months, not twenty-one. The world changed and we changed with it, but eventually the parks returned. I have been living vicariously through friends and colleagues visiting the parks, but now it is finally my time to experience it for myself.
I hardly know where to start! In addition to the new Avengers Campus and its amazing food, attractions, and show elements, I have to think about the classics I need to see. I have one full day and another half-day on this trip and that’s it. What do I want to do and what do I need to see?
Maybe that’s the key. At this point, I will be happy to return to the park that so many call home. I’m a recent convert, after all, but I think I have already set in my mind that feeling of HOME you get at Disneyland. I don’t know that I need to do anything. I want to do a lot, but need?
So I plan ahead a bit, looking forward to that day when I get off work and head straight to the airport instead of home. A couple of hours on a plane, a quick ride to the Disneyland Hotel, and I’m back in the magic. It’s exciting! Exciting enough that I will have to work hard to return to my relaxed attitude in the parks, going with the flow and not letting any particular need weigh down on the experience. I can’t wait to report back!
Oh, but Trader Sam’s reopened a few days ago.
