Let’s face it: visiting Walt Disney World usually means waiting in lines–sometimes very long ones that show no signs of moving. If you hate waiting in lines as much as most of us, you should take advantage of the Mobile Ordering option now available at many Walt Disney World quick-serve restaurants. With a little preparation, you can order lunch as you’re exiting Rock Around the Shop and have your meal waiting by the time you make your way to the Backlot Express.
At the time of this post, you can use the mobile ordering option at just over 20 restaurants throughout the World. For an up-to-date list along with detailed instructions on the process, click here.
To use the service, simply open the My Disney Experience app, tap your character, and then tap “Order Food” in the “My Plans” section of the next screen:
Sorry Pizza Hut fans, you can’t use your Pie Tops–at least not yet. Once you’ve selected the restaurant and the food items you want, you’re prompted to pay using whatever card you have associated with your account. Once your order is confirmed, you will have the option to click on “I’m Here–Prepare My Order.” The next screen you see alerts you that the meal is being prepared:
And finally you will receive an alert that your food is ready. Once you get that message, simply look for the Mobile Order Pickup sign at whatever restaurant you’ve selected and pick up your meal:
We have never had to wait more than a few minutes to pick up our food–much faster than the typical process of waiting in the dual lines on each side of the register in most WDW quick-serve restaurants. While everyone else is navigating those awkward “Who was first?” interactions with Cast Members and other guests at the cash registers, you can dig in to your Royal Guard burger (complete with barbecue brisket). I’m not sure if they served this kind of thing at Mos Eisley Cantina, but if they had, Han Solo and Greedo could probably have worked things out:
Like me, you might have had some less-than-stellar experiences with the My Disney Experience app, but this function seems to work very well. The only issue I’ve encountered with the Mobile Ordering function (and only with one order) is that instead of giving me the option to click “I’m Here–Prepare My Order,” the app went straight from accepting my payment information to the “We’re Preparing Your Order” screen. It wasn’t a problem since we were ready to eat, but if I had been trying to order ahead by any significant amount of time it would have been a headache. Because of this, I wait to order food until only 20-30 minutes before we are ready to eat.
If you haven’t tried Mobile Ordering, give it a shot! If you have, please share your opinions and experience in the Comment section below.
